Aron Demetz (1972)

Lives and works in Selva di Val Gardena, Bolzano Italy

Italian artist Aaron Demetz, is a native of the Grodin/Val Gardena in Northern Italy, a region with a rich tradition of woodcarving dating back to the 17th century. Among the newest generation of wood sculptors in South Tyrol, Demetz stands out as one of the most forward-thinking figures who boldly pushes the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship.

Demetz has developed the remarkable potential of the wooden sculpture in a unique and extraordinary body of work. His profound love for wood drives him to invest countless hours to create each piece. Employing traditional wood carving techniques in cedar-, maple- and walnut wood, Demetz also explores into various methods like using fire, resin application and surface shredding to tarnish the wood on his sculptures. His sculptures take the form of life-size figures that emphasize the interconnectedness of men and his environment, uniting them as an inseparable whole.

In his studio, Demetz doesn’t focus on the pure form of his sculptures but rather on the various processes applied to the medium. He explores how every aspect of the composition and decomposition of the material reflects upon the figure itself. His large sculptures range from raw and almost unfinished wood carvings to the burnt remnants of what once was, as seen in works like Tragedia dell’ Univocitá, 2011.

His pieces highlight the harmony and conflict that exist between man and nature, exposing the vulnerability of both.

In De Metz’s series, titled Advanced Minorities, he presents naked figures with meticulously textured elements frozen in unconventional poses, reminiscent of classical portraiture. His artworks profoundly engage viewers on both psychological and emotional levels, unveiling the intricate relationship between our existence and our disconnection from the natural world.

The latest development in the artist’s work is the use of 3D printing, which allows the figures to be cut out. He then manipulates the smooth surfaces resulting from this process in a way that creates a tension between a neutral and a personal charge inherent in the work. Injury, healing and metamorphosis are fundamental themes in the artist’s work.

Aron Demetz gained international recognition through his exhibition in the Italian Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale of 2016. In the piece Untitled conceived for the Venice Biennale, the sculptor incorporated natural resin, meticulously collected from the forests of his hometown.

His sculptures are included in important collections and his work is exhibited in individual and collective shows in galleries throughout the world. He was selected for the 53rd and in 2022 for the 59th Venice Biennale.
