Dov Ganchrow (1970 USA/IL)
Lives and works in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel
Dov Ganchrow is a product designer and associate professor at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. He has a special interest in prehistoric carving techniques, and tool architypes. He also learned to apply these techniques himself and sometimes combines traditional stone knapping with advanced contemporary digital technologies in singular new objects.
During his desert treks, he searches for suitable stones to work with. In the process, he also encounters authentic tools from the time way before Homo Sapiens. For example, he found a flint hand-axe estimated to be at least 700,000 years old near a stone circle that was possibly “only” 2,000 years old and situated near missile scrap from the army. An extremely inspiring environment for the artist/designer with a love for material culture within the hominin evolution.
He exhibited in museums worldwide, including the MOMA in New York. His objects have been shown at the Paris Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York, both of which have his work in their permanent collections.
At the large group exhibition ‘Préhistoire, une énigme moderne’ in 2017 at the Centre Pompidou,
a small work of his was chosen as the core image of the exhibition. It was displayed on a six-storey high banner on the facade of the museum. This small work, among others, will also be on display during the exhibition ‘Walking the Fields of Dreams’ at Gallery Visavu.
