Warffemius (1956)

Lives and works in The Hague, The Netherlands

Nature is an important theme in the multifaceted oeuvre of Warffemius. In many of his works we see references to plants and trees. The abstraction is often far-reaching, resulting in simply stylized trees and trunks with a few branches, sometimes with a leaf attached. Reduced to their essence.

Warffemius is a versatile artist. He makes sculptures, drawings and paintings. For the past few years, Warffemius’ paintings have become more free and open. He freed himself from strict stylization and paints delicate twigs, stems and mushrooms in thin transparent paint. Recent paintings and drawings are white and full of poetry. In his sculptures, however, he continues to build on the strictly stylized forms of nature. These works are balanced, strong and poetic.

Since 2005, Warffemius has been a member of the Potsdamer Gruppe, a German-Dutch group of befriended artists. They regularly show their work in exhibition together. Members include Hubertus von der Golz, Frank Michael Zeidler, Armando and Sjoerd Buisman. For the past four years, Warffemius has been exhibiting his work in several musea in China.
